How might we make finding the right music teacher easy and convenient?

Wavelength is a e-learning music platform that is designed around helping the students find the right teacher for them and vice-versa. The platform also focuses on the needs teachers starting out- who find it difficult to manage classes/get their students by letting them manage their classes, take workshops, publish blogs and more.

The dashboard helps both the Teacher and Students efficiently manage their classes with scheduling, note/file sharing, discussing and payment capabilities.

Background

In the current ecosystem of teaching and learning music, there are various stakeholders at play such as Music Academies, Independent Teachers, Part-Time Teachers/ Musicians and the Students.

The music academies function very much like schools, with the popular ones leveraging a well known name to gain recognition and goodwill. In this setting, the music teachers may not be treated fairly in terms of the visibility they are given and the percentage of fees offered to them. Some academies often also do not place much focus on the understanding needs the students and end up pairing them with the wrong teacher too.

Independent teachers coming up who do not wish to join academies either begin their own classes or have themselves listed on various platforms. This can be hard for some, especially if they are practicing and teaching a lesser known/non-mainstream form of music.

The goal of the survey was to understand the needs and challenges faced by these teachers & students.

>50% teachers part of the survey and interview were independent music teachers followed by aspiring teachers.

Most students answering the survey are under 30 years of age

Teachers

Teachers at academies felt that the focus was not on understanding student needs before they were assigned to teachers

Top challenges picked by aspiring teachers:

  • Reaching new students

  • Managing & Scheduling classes.
